Founded by Blythe Hill in 2013, Dressember works to end human slavery world wide.  In a very short time, Dressember has grown rapidly. In 5 years they’ve raised over 5M US dollars which is awarded to their grant partners.  Through targeted, strategic grants, Dressember works with some of the leading anti-trafficking organizations to to eliminate human trafficking and slavery.

We know that human slavery in these modern times still persists.

Here are some illuminating statistics:

Within the United States:

Global Slavery Index estimates that there were 403,000 people living in modern slavery here in the United States in 2016. For every thousand people in the US, there are 1.3 victims of slavery.

The 2018 GSI also provides estimates for 167 countries based on the proportion of the population to be in some form of modern slavery.

The 10 countries with the highest prevalence of modern slavery:

  1. North Korea
  2. Eritrea
  3. Burundi
  4. The Central African Republic
  5. Afghanistan
  6. Mauritania
  7. South Sudan
  8. Pakistan
  9. Cambodia
  10. Iran

An analysis of the 10 countries with the highest prevalence reveals a common connection between modern slavery and two external drivers: highly repressive regimes and/or armed conflict.
